The Conversation Women Avoid, That Men Embrace

I was having lunch with women who have gone before me, accomplished, financially savvy, and highly knowledgeable, when one of them asked a thought-provoking question:
"Why is it that women don’t gather often to talk about money, building wealth, and supporting each other , the way men do?" It hit me. Men meet at golf clubs, pubs, offices, or over drinks to talk about their goals, business ideas, investment opportunities, and wealth-building strategies. They exchange advice, open doors, and often leave these gatherings more empowered and equipped than when they arrived. Women, on the other hand, rarely have spaces where financial conversations flow so freely.
The Culture of Silence Around Money

For many women, talking about money is uncomfortable. Social norms teach us that discussing wealth can seem boastful, taboo, or even unladylike. Even among friends, there’s an unspoken fear of judgment, envy, or tension. So, conversations that could unlock ideas, mentorship, and opportunities often never happen. This silence doesn’t just keep women from sharing their wins, it limits exposure to strategies, knowledge, and financial confidence that could accelerate growth.
Why Men Are Comfortable Discussing Money
Culturally, men are conditioned to treat money as neutral territory. Discussing finances, deals, investments, and growth is seen as strategic rather than boastful. This openness allows them to learn from peers, hold each other accountable, and create networks that lift everyone involved. Women, by contrast, often prioritize maintaining harmony over ambition in social settings, unintentionally leaving money conversations on the sidelines.
Breaking the Silence: A Call to Action
The good news is that we can change this narrative. Here’s how:
Start small: Bring up financial wins or goals with one trusted friend.
Create safe spaces: Host small meetups or virtual forums where women can discuss money openly.
Normalize ambition: Celebrate financial success and curiosity without guilt.
Peer learning & mentorship: Share lessons learned, resources, and strategies — lift as you climb.
Why It Matters
The conversations we avoid aren’t trivial, they are opportunities. Every shared insight, every honest discussion about money, and every strategy exchange builds confidence, knowledge, and collective financial empowerment.
I challenge you today: look around your circle and see how you can start talking about money. Share a financial goal, discuss an investment idea, or simply ask a trusted friend about their approach. Every conversation is a step toward empowerment, and the first step begins with you.
